Do you hear the Bells?
The cold seeps in, deep, penetrates protective garb, feeds on brittle bones, makes cowards of strong men, reveals the liar in us all.
Nobody escapes, this consuming darkness, this obliterating black. It comes, it snuffs, relentless, it collect all that you are, save one thing.
Then They come, They plunder, They scrounge along and pick your bones, They haunt, They feed. Flashing teeth and ripping talons, snapping and sucking. Consuming all.
And that which you hoarded, all of it worthless now, if held in a balance would reveal the measure of a wasted life, time forever lost, squandered, you fool. Fool for gold.
For the one thing, the something that was within your preoccupied hands, your grubbing filthy fingers, the one thing that truly conveys, that one and only thing you can ever truly own, that one essence, is Love.
Love. Uncommitted. Simple. Honest. Made, shared, and given freely. Unconditional. Love.
They will come scratching for that, too. Bitter and full of hate, foul, swollen with jealousy. You must hold onto it with a passion, you must nurture it, you must protect it, with the fiercest verve like that which binds parent to child, you must embrace. Else all is lost. Truly lost. For, without Love, what do you have?
Here we stand, friends. Another round has come to pass and what do you show for it? Do you continue to vociferate? Are you part of the clamor? Are you of the legions fraught with insidious lust? Can you smell that? The stink of putrefaction, the lingering stench of lost souls.
What is that tolling in the distance? Does it do so for you?
Tell me, do you hear the bells?
