PIERRE AND THE BROKEN ARM
****************
As I was walking through the emergency room, I heard someone call my name.
“Mrs. Harrison, what are you doing here?”
I looked around and saw my neighbor Stephanie waving at me from one of the draped- off rooms. I walked over and said, “Hi Stephanie. I am a volunteer here. What are you doing here?”
Stephanie pulled the curtain back to reveal her 12 year-old brother, Brian, sitting on a gurney. “I drove Brian here to have his arm looked at. We think it might be broken.”
One look at Brian and I could tell something was wrong. His white t-shirt was covered in mud, there was grass in his hair, and his face was covered in dirt. There is nothing wrong with that. That is how Brian normally looks, but this time he wasn’t bouncing around the room like he usually did. This time he was sitting on the gurney, rocking back and forth holding his arm close to his chest.
Brian looked scared, lonely, and in pain, but he tried to hide his feelings and mumbled, “Hi Mrs. Harrison.”
To cheer Brian up, I told him Pierre was with me since he likes being in places with scientific equipment. Pierre used to work in a medical lab, but since retiring, he has lived with me. Pierre and Brian have spent many afternoons in each other’s backyard talking about science and comic books.
